The History of Conwy Castle
If there is one location that is the heart and soul of Conwy County, it is definitely Conwy Castle. This historic masterpiece is internationally renowned as a world heritage site, attracting thousands of visitors each year who come to marvel at this medieval masterpiece and its town walls.
Did you know that the castle was constructed between 1283 and 1289 since then has managed to survive many wars and conflicts since its construction.
The master builder James of Saint George was the architect who designed the castle, his other works include Harlech and Caernarfon castles, part of the famous 'ring of castles' built after Edward I of England had conquered Wales; furthermore, the operation cost an estimated £15,000 and was believed to have been built within four years by over 1,500 labourers.
Even today Conwy Castle is in impeccable condition as the famous fortress is home to the most intact set of medieval royal apartments in Wales. In fact, Conwy Castle is considered to be a fine example of late 13th century and early 14th century architecture in Europe by historians and architects.
As a result, this historic place attracts a total footfall of 150,000 tourists per year and costs approximately £50,000 in maintenance repairs annually.
The castle has been under the guardianship of CADW for many years and is not only perceived as being a major tourist attraction for the town but also for North Wales and is often top of the list of must see attractions in the local area.
